They hear me but they don't move
ADHD child behaviour
What to do right now
They genuinely heard you. The sound reached their ears. But their attention is locked onto whatever they are currently doing and their brain cannot switch without an external bridge. Do not call from another room. Walk to them. Get close. Say their name. Wait for eye contact. Then give one instruction. Physical proximity is the bridge between hearing and doing.
What your brain just did
Your body
They are physically present and auditorily receiving. Their attention is locked onto the current focus and their brain cannot release it to process the new input. They look like they are ignoring. They are stuck.
Your brain
Attention switching in ADHD requires the current focus to release, the new input to be processed, and the motor system to redirect. Each step uses executive function. When the current activity is preferred or stimulating, the release step can fail entirely.
What this did
Physical proximity and a direct cue break the lock. Getting close, saying their name, and waiting for eye contact provides the external signal that their internal switching mechanism cannot generate. Calling from another room almost never works.
What your child is experiencing
Their body
They can hear you. The sound is reaching their ears. But their attention is locked and their brain cannot release it to switch to your instruction. They look like they are ignoring. They are stuck.
Their brain
Attention in ADHD can lock onto a current task so strongly that new inputs cannot break through. The switching mechanism requires executive function that may not be available, especially if the current task is preferred or stimulating.
What they need
Walk to them. Get close. Say their name and wait. Eye contact first, then the instruction. Physical proximity provides the external switching signal that their internal system cannot generate.
