They always need the last word

ADHD child behaviour

What to do right now

Every argument ends with them getting the last word. The conversation cannot close because their need for resolution is stronger than your need for it to stop. The last word is perseverative. Walking away is not losing. Say: 'We are done talking about this for now.' Then physically move to a different space. The conversation ends when you stop participating, not when they agree to stop.

What your brain just did

Your body

The conversation cannot end. They keep coming back with one more thing.

Your brain

Perseverative speech in ADHD means the conversational loop does not close because the emotional resolution the brain is seeking has not arrived. They cannot stop because the feeling driving the words has not been discharged.

What this did

Walking away is not losing. 'We are done talking about this for now.' Then physically move. The conversation ends when you stop participating, not when they agree to stop.
