The 5pm crash when the meds wear off
ADHD parenting moment
What to do right now
The crash is pharmacological, not behavioural. Their brain just lost the dopamine support it had all day. Don't try to reason with the rebound. Lower demands for the next 30 to 60 minutes. Snack, low-stimulation activity, minimal transitions. This passes. It is the medication leaving, not your child arriving.
What your brain just did
Your body
Their mood, behaviour, and regulation just shifted noticeably within 30 to 60 minutes. The medication that was providing dopamine and norepinephrine support all day has left their system. The crash is pharmacological withdrawal, not a mood swing.
Your brain
Stimulant medication increases dopamine availability in the prefrontal cortex. When it wears off, dopamine drops below the pre-medication baseline temporarily. This rebound dip means the child is briefly less regulated than they would be completely unmedicated.
What this did
The worst hour of the day is predictable. Knowing it is coming allows you to plan around it rather than react to it. Lower demands, higher snacks, minimal transitions during the rebound window.
What your child is experiencing
Their body
Their mood just crashed. They were fine an hour ago and now everything is wrong. They do not understand what happened. The shift feels sudden and frightening to them.
Their brain
The medication was providing dopamine that their brain cannot produce reliably on its own. When it left, the dopamine dropped below their natural baseline. They are temporarily less regulated than they would be completely unmedicated. They did not choose to crash.
What they need
Low demands, a snack, and patience. The crash passes in 30 to 60 minutes. Do not try to teach, correct, or reason during the rebound. Their prefrontal cortex is at its lowest point of the day.
