They climbed something dangerous before I could blink

ADHD parenting moment

What to do right now

They did the dangerous thing before the thought 'is this safe' could arrive. That is the ADHD impulse gap. Secure them first. Check for injury. The safety conversation happens later, calmly, with specific language about what the danger was. In the moment, your fear is valid but your lecture will not land.

What your brain just did

Your body

Fear and anger arrived simultaneously. The fear is for their safety. The anger is at the risk. Both are valid. Both are loud.

Your brain

Impulse-driven risk-taking in ADHD children skips the risk-assessment step. The thrill or curiosity signal reached the motor system before the 'is this safe' evaluation could fire. They did not choose to ignore danger. The danger assessment arrived after the action.

What this did

Physical safety first, emotional processing second. Secure the situation, check for injury, regulate yourself. The safety teaching happens later with specific, concrete language about what the danger was. Not 'be more careful.' That is too abstract.

What your child is experiencing

Their body

The climb or the dangerous action felt exciting, not scary. They may not understand why you are frightened because the danger did not register before or during the action.

Their brain

Risk assessment requires prefrontal cortex evaluation that happens after the motor action in ADHD. The thrill signal arrived first. The danger signal arrived after. They did not ignore the danger. They did not perceive it in time.

What they need

Concrete, specific safety information. Not 'be careful' which is too abstract. 'That shelf can fall. Falling from that height breaks bones.' Specific consequences connected to specific actions. Delivered calmly, later.
