They're wired at 10pm and physically cannot fall asleep
ADHD parenting moment
What to do right now
Their brain will not stop. The default mode network is generating thoughts, worries, plans, replays at a speed they cannot control. They are not choosing to stay awake. Lying in the dark with a racing mind is genuinely distressing. An audiobook or calm music gives the brain something to track without activating it. Reduce the demand to 'just close your eyes,' not 'go to sleep.'
What your brain just did
Your body
It is 10pm and they are wired. You are exhausted and resentful. The gap between what you need and what they need right now is as wide as it gets.
Your brain
ADHD delayed sleep phase means melatonin releases later. The default mode network activates in low-stimulation environments and generates racing thoughts. They are not choosing to stay awake. Their brain will not switch off. Lying in the dark with a mind running at full speed is genuinely distressing for them.
What this did
Consistent wake time matters more than bedtime. An audiobook gives the brain something to track without activating it. Talk to the prescriber if stimulants are contributing to the sleep difficulty. This is one of the most modifiable ADHD symptoms with the right support.
What your child is experiencing
Their body
They are lying in the dark with their eyes open, their brain generating thoughts at a speed they cannot control. They are tired and cannot sleep. The frustration of being exhausted but wired is real.
Their brain
ADHD delayed sleep phase is a biological timing difference. Their melatonin releases later. The default mode network activates in the absence of stimulation and generates a stream of racing thoughts. This is not a choice or a habit.
What they need
Something for the brain to track. An audiobook on a timer. White noise. A breathing exercise. Reduce the demand from 'go to sleep' to 'listen to this.' Their body will do the rest.
