Losing the paperwork, the date, the appointment

ADHD parent behaviour

What to do right now

Something is lost or missed. First: figure out the damage. Can it be recovered? Call, email, reschedule. Most things can be recovered — embarrassingly, but practically. Second: write down whatever comes next before you do anything else. Not in your phone. On something physical you'll see.

What your brain just did

Your body

The form is lost. The date was missed. The appointment forgotten. The familiar sinking feeling of a system that failed again.

Your brain

ADHD working memory holds fewer items for shorter durations. Paper-based tasks are especially vulnerable because they require remembering something that has no digital reminder, no notification, no prompt. The task exists only in working memory, which is exactly where ADHD is weakest.

What this did

External systems beat internal intentions. The fix isn't trying harder to remember. It's reducing the number of things that depend on memory. One photo of the form. One calendar entry made immediately. One physical location for papers.
