Medication timing making home worse than work

ADHD parent behaviour

What to do right now

Your medication has worn off and your ADHD is now running the show at home. Name it if it's helpful: "My brain is doing its ADHD thing right now. I need fifteen minutes before we talk about this." Step back where you can. If something genuinely needs addressing, write it down rather than trying to navigate it while dysregulated.

What your brain just did

Your body

The medication wore off and the shift was physical. You can feel the regulation leaving your body. The person at work and the person at home are operating on different neurochemistry.

Your brain

Stimulant medication increases dopamine and norepinephrine availability in the prefrontal cortex. When it wears off, regulatory capacity drops measurably. The rebound period can produce irritability that exceeds the unmedicated baseline. This is pharmacological, not personal.

What this did

Your family gets the worst version of your day because of medication timing, not because of how you feel about them. Talk to your prescriber about extended-release options or afternoon boosters if the rebound consistently damages home life.
