I dread every school email and call
ADHD parent behaviour
What to do right now
The school's name on your phone triggers a cortisol spike before you even read the message. It is almost never good news. You have been conditioned by repeated negative contact to dread every interaction. This is a learned stress response, not anxiety disorder. You can let the message sit for ten minutes before opening it. It will still be there.
What your brain just did
Your body
The phone buzz from the school triggers a physical stress response. Your body has been conditioned by repeated negative contact.
Your brain
Pavlovian conditioning. The school's name has been paired with problem reports enough times that the association is now automatic. The cortisol spike happens before you read the message.
What this did
You can let the message sit for ten minutes. It will still be there. Read it when you have capacity, not when the notification demands it. And if you need to, set a separate notification sound for the school so you can choose when to engage.
