I became so controlling that I made everything worse

ADHD parent behaviour

What to do right now

You tightened because the uncertainty felt intolerable. If the routine was exact, if the shoes were by the door, if the bag was packed precisely, then the morning might not explode. The control was an attempt to prevent chaos. But it created a different kind. Choose one non-negotiable and let the rest be imperfect today. Perfect routines do not exist in ADHD households. Good enough ones do.

What your brain just did

Your body

The tightening felt protective. If you controlled every variable, maybe the explosion would not happen. But the rigidity created its own pressure, on you and on everyone around you.

Your brain

Control is a common ADHD coping strategy for unpredictability. When executive function cannot reliably plan, sequence, or remember, controlling the environment becomes a substitute for controlling the brain. The need for control increases as depletion increases.

What this did

Micromanagement removes your child's agency, which can increase their demand-avoidance response. Choose the one thing that genuinely matters today and let everything else be good enough. The mess by the door is survivable. The relationship is what you are protecting.
