I created chaos when things were finally calm
ADHD parent behaviour
What to do right now
Things were quiet and your brain could not tolerate it. You started a new project, rearranged the furniture, picked a fight, or changed the rules. The calm felt uncomfortable because your ADHD nervous system reads low stimulation as boredom, which feels physically unpleasant. Notice the urge next time. Add safe stimulation: music, a walk, a podcast. Do not detonate the routine to feed the brain.
What your brain just did
Your body
The quiet felt wrong. Not peaceful, uncomfortable. Your body was restless, your mind scanning for input. The urge to do something, anything, was stronger than the knowledge that the calm was working.
Your brain
ADHD brains require stimulation to maintain baseline arousal. Quiet can drop arousal below comfortable levels, producing restlessness, irritability, and an urgent need for input. The chaos-creation is the nervous system self-medicating through novelty and intensity.
What this did
The next time calm arrives and your body starts scanning for input, notice the urge before you act on it. Add safe stimulation: music, a walk, a fidget, a phone call. The routine does not need to be sacrificed to feed the brain.
