The IEP or accommodation meeting left me feeling dismissed

ADHD parent behaviour

What to do right now

The meeting felt like performing your child's struggles for an audience that had already decided. The accommodations you asked for were questioned. Your expertise as the parent was subtly dismissed. The frustration is valid. Document what was discussed. Follow up in writing. Request the specific accommodations in an email so there is a record. You are not asking for special treatment. You are asking for what your child needs to access the same education.

What your brain just did

Your body

The meeting felt adversarial. Your expertise as the person who knows this child best was subtly dismissed. The institutional resistance is exhausting.

Your brain

Advocating for your child in an institutional setting requires sustained executive function, emotional regulation under pressure, and tolerance of perceived criticism. Every one of these is harder with ADHD. The meeting depletes you of exactly what you need most.

What this did

Document everything in writing. Follow up by email. Request specific accommodations with specific language. The paper trail matters more than the conversation.
