Someone questioned whether my child really has ADHD

ADHD parent behaviour

What to do right now

Someone said 'they seem fine to me' or 'all kids are like that' or 'are you sure about the diagnosis.' The questioning landed on your rejection sensitivity and activated every doubt you have ever had. They are not right. The diagnosis was made by a professional who assessed your child. You do not need to defend it in a social setting. A brief 'we are working with professionals on this' is enough.

What your brain just did

Your body

The questioning hit the exact spot where your own doubt lives. The part of you that still wonders if everyone is right and you are making excuses.

Your brain

Your ADHD rejection sensitivity means the questioning activated pain circuits. The doubt is neurological, not rational. The diagnosis was made by a professional with training, assessment tools, and clinical judgment. A casual observer does not have those.

What this did

You do not need to defend the diagnosis socially. 'We are working with professionals' is enough. The people who need to understand ADHD are the ones involved in your child's care. Everyone else gets the short version.
