My partner checks out and leaves me to handle the hard parts

ADHD parent behaviour

What to do right now

Your partner disappears when it gets hard. The bathroom, the garage, the phone. You are left holding the meltdown alone. The checking out may be their own dysregulation, avoidance, or a genuine belief that you handle it better. Whatever the reason, it is not sustainable. Name it without accusation: 'I need you to stay in the room even when it is hard. I cannot do this part alone.'

What your brain just did

Your body

Your partner left the room again. You are alone with the meltdown.

Your brain

The checking out may be avoidance, overwhelm, or a genuine belief that you handle it better. Whatever the reason, the pattern leaves you as the sole container for the hardest moments.

What this did

Name it without accusation: 'I need you to stay in the room even when it is hard. I cannot do this alone.' If it persists, this is a couples issue, not a parenting one.
