What is happening in your child's brain

Your child's sensory needs are real. The sock seam that you cannot feel is the loudest signal in their body. The food texture that seems fine to you triggers a genuine alarm response in their nervous system. Their need for movement, noise, and touch is their body generating the stimulation their brain requires to function. Asking for stillness and silence is asking them to suppress a regulation tool.

The dual-ADHD dynamic

The parent needs less input. The child needs more input. Both needs are valid. Both are neurological. The solution is not suppression of one, it is accommodation of both. Designated loud spaces and quiet spaces. Noise-reducing earplugs that lower volume without blocking speech. Separate rooms when both needs are at their peak. The goal is coexistence, not control.

What actually works

  1. Noise-reducing earplugs for the parent. They lower the volume without blocking conversation. This is the single most effective sensory accommodation for ADHD parents.
  2. Designate a loud space and a quiet space. The child can be loud in one, the parent can be quiet in the other.
  3. Accommodate sensory needs before they become sensory crises. Cut the tags, buy the seamless socks, find the toothpaste that works.
  4. When you are touched out, name it kindly: 'My body needs a break from touching. I love you and I need five minutes.'
  5. Give the child alternative sensory input: a wobble cushion, a fidget tool, something to chew, weighted blanket. Meet the need through a different channel.

What your partner needs to know

They may not share your sensory profile. What they need to know: sensory overload in ADHD is not being dramatic. It is a real processing limit. When the parent says they are full, they are full. Pushing past it leads to a snap, not adaptation.
